Mediating Modesty: Fashioning Faithful Bodies
Daniel Miller of University College, London, addressing the symposium held at the London College of Fashion on 15th June 2011. The event was hosted by the research project, part of the Religion and Society Programme, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Councils.
Daniel Miller is Professor of Material Culture at UCL, and author together with Sophie Woodward of “A Manifesto for the Study of Denim” (2007), with whom he runs the Global Denim Project, which co-ordinates studies of denim. He argues that denim is modest clothing in almost every sense of the term, and asks why certain Jewish communities have banned the wearing of denim. 22.51
