Post-Doctoral Research Assistant, Cardiff Centre for Chaplaincy Studies

A Partnership between St. Michael’s College, Llandaff & Cardiff University The Centre has recently been awarded a contract by the National Offender Management Service, to research the contribution that prison chaplaincy makes to the lives of prisons and prisoners, in a multi-faith context. The Research Assistant will carry out key research tasks, as a member of the team for this project: 1. Initial literature search and review, leading to development of research instruments 2. Interviews in prisons with chaplains, prisoners and staff; transcription and data analysis 3. Focus groups to develop initial analysis, further transcription and data analysis 4. Preparing reports for the Prison Service and for wider publication The post: • Is full-time, starting in January 2010 for twelve months • Will be remunerated at an appropriate point on the Cardiff University scale for a PDRA (Grade 5 or 6, depending on expertise and experience) • Will be located at St. Michael’s College (with fully equipped office), with access to Cardiff University facilities • Offers the possibility of low-cost accommodation in the College The person appointed: • Will be working currently at doctoral or post-doctoral level • Will have good experience of working with qualitative research methods, including interviews/focus groups and subsequent data analysis • Will have experience of using qualitative data analysis software (probably NVivo or ATLAS.ti) • Will have an academic background relevant to research relating to religion and belief in the public domain (e.g. theology, religious studies, social sciences) A letter of application and CV, with the names of two referees, should be sent to: The Rev’d Dr Andrew Todd, Director, Cardiff Centre for Chaplaincy Studies, St. Michael’s College, Cardiff Road, Llandaff, Cardiff. Wesley and Methodist Studies Co-Editors William Gibson and Geordan Hammond Book Reviews Editor

The editors of Wesley and Methodist Studies are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic scholar to become honorary book reviews editor of this annual publication. The appointment will be with effect as soon as possible or by March 2010 and in preparation for volume 3 of the publication in 2011. The appointment will be for an initial term of five years. The role of book reviews editor is to identify appropriate books for review and reviewers in the fields of Wesleyan and Methodist history and theology, and to administer the process of requesting and despatching books, collecting and copy-editing reviews for publication and liaising with the editors. The reviews editor will be a member of the editorial board of the publication. Applications from academic staff and faculty associated with Wesleyan and Methodist Centres would be welcomed, although this is not a requirement for the post. Expressions of interest from Wesleyan and Methodist Centres in becoming a collaborative partner of WMS (joining with the current partners: Manchester Wesley Research Centre and The Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History) would be welcomed.
